The Le Méridien Boston Cambridge is experiencing significant issues, primarily revolving around deceptive practices (destination fees, room “upgrades”), poor room maintenance (broken appliances, pests), and substandard service. Recent reviews highlight a decline in quality and a lack of basic amenities.
1 star — save your money and your Bonvoy points We were told our room was “upgraded” thanks to our Bonvoy status. Let me be clear: this was either a flat-out lie or a confession that the rest of their rooms are uninhabitable. The “upgrade” looked like the lowest-grade room you’d find at any Marriott property anywhere — the exact same room, just on a higher floor. Complete BS dressed up as a perk. Then there’s the $25-per-day “destination fee,” charged for absolutely nothing. No service, no amenity, no justification — just a line item designed to pad the bill. The room itself was a museum of broken things. The TV didn’t work. The fridge didn’t work. The drawers didn’t work. Nothing in the space was modern, clean, or remotely nice. There wasn’t even a shop on-site to grab water or basic essentials. The breakfast was the most disgusting I’ve ever been served at a hotel, made worse by absurdly restrictive hours and staff who were openly rude. There’s no proper restaurant to fall back on. The bar? Painfully slow, and they couldn’t make 90% of the cocktails on their own menu because they were out of supplies. But here’s the part that crosses from incompetence into something worse: we instructed staff — verbally and in writing — not to enter our room. They entered anyway. That’s not a service failure. That’s a basic breach of trust and privacy. Avoid this hotel. Whatever they’re selling as an “experience,” it isn’t one.
They told me I had to pay for parking. This is the first time I’ve ever stayed at a hotel that charges guests for parking. The faucet was broken, and there was no water available. I paid the parking fee and checked out early the next morning. I resolved never to stay there again. However, late that evening, I was charged an additional fee. They claimed that I had taken the bottled water. There hadn't been any water in the room to begin with, yet they were attempting to charge me for water I supposedly consumed. I called them immediately and requested that the charge be reversed. I also intend to report this matter to Marriott. The service is absolutely abysmal. You have no business using the Marriott name. This is the first hotel I’ve ever encountered that doesn't provide complimentary water—and certainly the first to attempt to charge extra for it.
What I liked: lobby bar, location, room had a window you could open, ability to decline housekeeping. What I didnt like: seeing a mouse scamper across the lobby floor, bed pillows were so terribly stiff. No room service and no little shop to purchase a water bottle or snacks. Breakfast buffett overpriced ($50 for 2- (scrambled eggs, sausage, oatmeal, pastries, fruit- no omelette bar, no salads, no waffles or smoked salmon- just basic)
Mouse in the house. We were sitting in the main bar area before the marathon and saw a mouse so often I was able to grab pics of it. That tracks with the relatively poor cleaning of rooms (garbage cans not emptied) and wear and tear. Did not expect this for 4 star prices. Service was fine but not overly helpful.
Front desk and bell staff — including Ashley and Jacob — are top-notch! Breakfast buffet is good. Onsite ATM is handy. Rooms are clean and well-appointed, but some are starting to show their age a bit (a leaky tub faucet here, a drooping door handle there, small scuffs on furniture, etc.). But you can’t get a better location if you’re headed to MIT!
