The Sheraton Commander Hotel is undergoing renovations and while recent guests praise the staff and location, significant operational issues persist, including water quality concerns, elevator outages, and inconsistent service. Despite some positive reviews highlighting the restaurant and historic charm, concerns about outdated facilities and a lack of amenities are prevalent.
The hotel is under renovation, the room looked great. This is my 3rd time staying here. This was a much improved room. I believe because of the renovation the water is brown, thus someone should go in rooms to bleed the pipes. I ran the water for 20 minutes until it cleared up. Hair in bathroom sink. Floor lounge on 6th floor coffee/tea machine out of order. Because of hotel renovation, no gym access...wish there was a partnership with a nearby gym they could have offered or a extra bonus stay points for the inconvenience. Just checked in, may come back to edit. So, came back to edit as promised. Day two, breakfast was suppose to start at 7am, two workers said the cook did not show up. I asked to speak to the manager, the worker said the manager is running late. So I found breakfast somewhere else. The positive is, I did dine in Nubar last night and the staff was awesome, food was delicious, bartender was on point. Stay tuned for Day 3 & Day 4. Day three, woke up early to take a shower before the water work began. Intercom sounds off, perhaps from testing or renovation work, couldn't hear the cause, was in the shower. Breakfast great! Came back in the evening, two elevators out of order. Had dinner, food and service top notch. Front desk staff helpful and attentive.
Great hotel. Rooms were very nice, having been recently remodelled (with a nice bathtub and comfortable beds). Staff were incredibly professional, friendly, and always helpful. Location itself is good, especially if you’re staying in the Harvard area. Journey to central Boston require slightly more effort but there is a direct train which gets you there in under half an hour, including the walk to the station (so nothing too cumbersome).
An older hotel in a great Harvard Square location. Undergoing extensive renovations (Nov 2025) which means noise and lots of debris being moved through the lobby area. Will be sure to return when they're done, but in the meantime enjoyed the room, the restaurant and the location.
The location, service, and my particular suite we’re all excellent. I can highly recommend this hotel. My only Miner suggestion is to open the restaurant earlier for breakfast. 7 o’clock is too late when people have things to do and they’re in the area.
Not coming back. Way too many small problems from how outdated and even run down in parts to the overall cleanliness. Rooms were alright to be fair. Service was sub par. Elevators are tiny and slow. No room service. No pool. No gym. Very old building and it shows everywhere. They are doing a remodel. I would stay here over that rat hole Porter Square hotel but likely not staying at the Commander again either. On a positive note, the attached restaurant and bar Nubar was excellent for drinks, food and most specifically fantastic service! *In response to the GM’s reply below - yes they are renovating but they don’t have reduced prices during renovation. We paid $700/night for our room for 3 nights and at that price point I would be expecting far more.
The staff here were excellent. From the moment we walked in until check out, they were friendly and went out of their way to help. I thought about docking them for being such a high cost without refrigerators in the room, but they brought one to us! Location was great - easy walking distance to Harvard Yard and Commons. Everything is about a ten minute walk. I will return next time I take a class!
We had the absolute pleasure of being part of the Harvard School of Public Health event at the Sheraton Commander Hotel, and the experience was exceptional in every way! The historic charm of the venue, combined with its modern amenities, made it a perfect setting for such a distinguished gathering. A heartfelt thank you to the entire Sheraton Commander Hotel staff for their outstanding customer service. From the moment we arrived, every team member we interacted with was welcoming, professional, and incredibly attentive. Their support and attention to detail made the setup process effortless and helped ensure the event ran smoothly for all involved. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the organization and care from the hotel staff created a seamless experience not just for us as a vendor, but for all the event guests as well. It was truly a pleasure to work alongside such a dedicated team. Thank you again to the Sheraton Commander Hotel for your hospitality and excellence. We look forward to many more events together in the future! Highly recommend this venue for anyone looking to host a professional, polished, and memorable event in the Cambridge area.
A True Gem in Cambridge – Feels Like Family We’ve been staying at the Sheraton Commander for nearly four years now, every time we visit our son who goes to college nearby. From day one, this hotel has never ceased to amaze us with its warm hospitality, clean and comfortable rooms, excellent food, and — most of all — its incredible staff. From the moment you arrive, the valet attendants take great care of your car, and the front desk team greets you with a warm welcome that instantly makes you feel at home. The rooms are spotless, thanks to the hardworking and often behind-the-scenes housekeeping team. And NuBar, the hotel’s in-house restaurant, consistently delivers great meals — especially breakfast. What really sets this hotel apart is the people. You can tell the staff genuinely care about the guest experience, and the low turnover rate is a testament to the positive culture here. It feels like one big family, and that pride in their work shows in every interaction. Special shout-outs to Katelynn, Lisa, Fabiola, and Kevin at the front desk — their hospitality is second to none. If you're dining at NuBar, ask Rudy the chef for one of his fabulous omelets, and don't be surprised if Richard, the manager, stops by to make sure everything is perfect. If you're organizing a group or company stay, reach out to Greg, the assistant manager — he’s incredibly helpful and professional. This might not be the newest or trendiest hotel in the area, but if you’re looking for a clean, comfortable place in a great location — with a staff that goes above and beyond — this is your spot. I travel frequently, and when I come across a gem like this, it deserves recognition. Four years ago, a friend recommended the Sheraton Commander to us — and I’m so glad she did.
I stay at the Commander 3-5 days a month, year round. It's a great option if you need something in the heart of Cambridge. The gym is adequate, the rooms are more than adequate, and the restaurant is very good. If you have sufficient status, breakfast and/or apps and/or desert is free every day. (Though, it would be GREAT if breakfast started a little earlier - or at least a coffee bar was made available a little earlier) The main complaints people have here are more about Cambridge than the hotel. A few things to understand: Hotel rooms in Cambridge are all very small. If you work up to decent Marriot status, you can get an upgrade to something with more breathing room. But all the rooms will be small because space is very hard to come by in Cambridge. There's no room to build anything, so folks just renovate old, cramped buildings. Prices will fluctuate dramatically with the university schedules. The most off-season prices will be close to $200 a night and the most on-season prices will be well over $1,000. This is because there are very limited options for parents of students when they move in or graduate, etc. The hotel doesn't dictate this. The market does. You can stay closer to Boston or Alewife during peak price seasons and save some money. These buildings are very old. Even though there are nearly constant renovations, these buildings are old, so you'll get a squeaky floor or shower that doesn't drain right or windows that don't block out the road noise enough. If a police siren goes off within a couple of blocks, it's going to be loud. Every hotel in Cambridge is going to be like that. You don't stay at the Commander for a 5-star, VIP experience. You stay there to be comfortable overnight and wake up within walking distance to Harvard and history.
The hotel is in a great location—a 10-minute walk to Harvard Square, making it convenient to attend a conference in Harvard. The hotel is quaint and charming, and the rooms are spacious and well-maintained. The elevator is tiny. The only inconvenience is that the hotel doesn’t have room service, and the room doesn’t have a minibar or fridge.
