Royal Sonesta Boston seamlessly blends artful sophistication with striking views of the Charles River and Boston skyline. This distinguished Cambridge retreat offers a refined atmosphere where contemporary elegance meets timeless style. The Royal Sonesta - Boston/Cambridge generally receives positive feedback, particularly regarding location, views, and staff friendliness. However, recent reviews have highlighted concerns about outdated rooms in the older wing, inconsistent cleanliness, and issues with hotel policies and service responsiveness. The hotel boasts a beautiful lobby and surrounding area, but certain aspects of the guest experience require attention.
Great. We had an issue and Front Desk Manager Christina Berrios went above and beyond to solve it, upgrading us to a fantastic room. She was so kind and we would return any time.
It has been a great trip so far. The staff has been super friendly and helpful. The bar is well stocked. The room is nicely sized and the bathroom is laid out well!
This hotel has a spectacular view of Boston Skyline. Right in front of the Charles River which this time around was frozen but sunrise from my room was amazing everyday! Something beautiful to wake up on those cold mornings before going to the gym. Everything was near about 10-15 mins on a Lyft since it’s cheaper than Uber. Many things to do walking distance. Room were extremely clean and had all the amenities needed! Front lobby staff is the ultimate best; they really care for you even though it isn’t hotel job related; very appreciative for the Puertorrican lady cared enough to make me a tea since she noticed I had caught a cold ?? She went above and beyond! She needs a raise! Definitely will come back to this hotel in my future visits to Boston! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
For the amount of money we were paying, i was hoping the rooms would be better kept. As other commenters said, the old wing was, well… old. Some of the wallpaper was bubbling and the pipes in the bathroom were rattling. The water pressure wasn’t great either and the sink was pooling water. The seal on the shower was all removed so every time we used it water went everywhere. When we asked maintenance to check he shrugged and said the sink was draining normally and there was nothing he could do about the shower seal. We were leaving the following day so it wasn’t worth asking for a room change but overall i wouldn’t say the experience was great. On a more positive note, the bed was very comfortable, the room was spacious, and the front desk employees were super sweet (especially Christina) The view is beautiful though.
Staying here with 4 kids. We had dinner at the restaurant and it was delicious. We had a small issue with the room key / adjoining rooms and the staff is super friendly and helpful. The views are beautiful, and super clean. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone.
The basics. The hotel is well kept, rooms are clean, up to date, beds are comfortable. No microwaves in the room, they are setup on tables at two locations on the main floor only. Usually had to wait in line to use one. TV service was out for 5 days. The front desk always said it was back on, even when it was not. Hotel policies are weird and not published. House Keeping saw a small cooking device in an open bag in my room. Security deactivated my door, so I had to go back to the front desk, then was told to meet security to fix the lock. Security then met me at my room, reactivated the lock. Then told me I was violating hotel policy by having a cooking appliance in my room and they could store it for me. I declined the offer. Security also told a member of my team that alcoholic beverages were not allowed in the room, after HK spotting a small bottle in his room. However, customers that purchased a drink at the bar were allowed to take it back to the room. Their method of using security to inform customers of hotel policy was very irritating. I would not stay at this hotel again if I had a choice. There are many other hotels in this area.
The Royal Sonesta is a fantastic location for wedding preparations and portraits. I photographed a couple getting ready here, and the experience was wonderful from start to finish. The rooms were bright, spacious, and beautifully designed—perfect for capturing all the meaningful getting-ready moments. The staff was welcoming and attentive, creating a relaxed environment for the couple on their big day. With its elegant interiors and stunning views along the Charles River, The Royal Sonesta is an excellent choice for couples looking to start their wedding day in a beautiful, stress-free setting. —Brett Crawford Photography
Friends and I decided to take a trip to Boston in October, and were shocked by the cost of hotels. The Royal Sonesta was the most affordable at the time, that was still centrally located to public transportation/trains stations and near the places we wanted to be able to get to. Our only requirements were least expensive, fit 4 adults, not terrible reviews, safe, and near public transportation. I didn't look at much else on the website when booking, so when we walked into the lobby we were surprised by how beautiful it was. This was not at all what we were expecting for the price point - but in the best way. We arrived late around 11pm or midnight and were promptly greeted by Naima at the front desk (spoiler alert Naima was the highlight of our stay). She was training someone that night, so he assisted in checking us in as she gave us all the information we would need and joked around with us. To have someone who's that bubbly and kind late at night is a treat! When we opened our room key holder and saw all the key designs we were giddy with excitement, and promptly looked up all the different hotel mascots using the "hotel guide" QR code. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable! We easily slept all 4 adults in the 2 beds and had plenty of room for luggage, unpacking, and to sprawl out. The views were great, despite some construction nearby. My only real "complaint" or let down was the water pressure in the shower was really bad. I don't mean it just wasn't as good as at home, I mean I you to stay in the shower and intentionally scub your hair for an extended period of time to get the shampoo out, and even then you may get out of the shower and notice there is still shampoo residue and have to get back in. It was barely enough pressure to wash your hair - and we tried everything to adjust it and nothing improved. The location was walkable to a train station, multiple bus stops, to a mall, and to other nearby things that may be needed. The area felt very safe, even walking around at night. The daily dining credit could be used at the Starbucks/coffee shop/little store in the lobby, plus any of the dining location - which worked well for us to grab a speciality drink in the AM before brunch reservations. The hotel is dog friendly, so we did get to see a few pups too! We were in and out at weird hours, but most nights/late nights and early morning Naima was at the front desk, always just as bubbly as when we met her, always engaged in a conversation with guest, always waving hello or goodbye to us, or always having a quick conversation with us when she wasn't busy. She is a true gem. Any questions we had, she had answers. She was so delightful and truly seemed to love her job and the hotel guests. It's so rare to find people, particularly that work odd or overnight shifts, that are just filled with so much joy and really elevate an experience as a guest - Royal Sonesta is lucky to have her! If you arrive late or super early and see a woman at the front desk with a giant smile, just know you are in for a treat! Overall, the hotel is lovely, the rooms are spacious, the staff is friendly, and the small details such as the mascots and card keys are fantastic. We had a wonderful stay and I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area.
We stayed here on our wedding night and we’re greeted kindly and upgraded. However after the fact my wife’s mother who had booked our rooms was not given back a deposit that she had to put down. She spent months trying to contact them to remedy it and was always directed elsewhere. This is completely unacceptable and due to this I would not recommend this hotel.
Stayed at the Royal Sonesta for 3 nights this past weekend. I booked it for the great location and reasonable price, especially given the advertised quality. Pros: Friendly staff Great food and coffee options (vegan-friendly too) Convenient location with spectacular views Cons: Unfortunately, the cons outweighed the pros for me. I work from my hotel room often, so cleanliness is critical — and the room was disgusting. I was placed in the older wing, which looked nothing like the photos online. Despite housekeeping spending hours on the floor, the room was poorly cleaned: stains, disorganization, and surfaces left untouched. I ended up grabbing supplies from the cleaning cart to clean it myself. Water pressure was non existent, and drainage didn’t work very well so water pooled every time I showered and stayed there until I used the shower next. I requested a room change after the first night, but was told the hotel was fully booked due to weddings and conferences. The walls were also paper thin — I could hear every sound from the hallway and adjacent rooms. The one bright spot was Christina at the front desk, who listened to my concerns with empathy. She's the only reason I’d consider giving this hotel another chance.
