The White Elephant is a luxury hotel and residential property in Nantucket, praised for its beautiful setting and family-friendly amenities. However, recent reviews highlight inconsistencies in service levels, particularly regarding responsiveness and training of staff, and occasional issues with room amenities and temperature control.
First let me say that this is a very nice hotel and the staff was very nice, it's the type of place you could host a wedding at and it would be an incredible experience but for the average traveller this place is overrated honestly. I was charged 2k a day for my room and you're telling me the spa and breakfast isn't included? There was a huge list of amenities on expedia but they're not all included . . Give me a break!
Had to get this out….. So let’s begin. I chose this hotel because it was our first time to Nantucket. I wanted to”the best” so I chose here. Let’s begin clear. I spent 3 nights at $2000 per night. One would say this type of fee is associated with establishments such as Ritz, Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, etc… With the fore mentioned, there is a level of SERVICE that coincides with the overall price demanded. Sadly this is the first disconnect of the White Elephant. Is the staff nice? Yes 100%, but have they had the training and support in hospitality? Absolutely not. A simple request for ice in my room took 2 calls and 30 min. Makes me wonder what were they doing? It’s off season…not busy. Between the time I booked and arrived I had 3 calls out to the concierge. None were returned. Asked for help with restaurants. Zero help other than an email with a list of restaurants, that you could acquire off Google. Again, nice just zero service. The concierge job has to be the best on the island, cause you can look busy yet really not do much. There was a wedding so I suspect they got all the attention. Best part of the hotel is the bellman that also will drive you in courtesy shuttle. All those guys were great! White Elephant has a hotel in Palm Beach and the service there is considerably better. The issue the hotel has like so many other places is all seasonal staff. They can check the box but not go above and beyond. The vibe is exactly the same you feel when going to the Caribbean. The people are nice but my god you will not get service that coincides with what you will pay. Many things about the island are slightly over hyped. Beautiful place but people quickly forget what customers are spending to enjoy their time there. Lastly, why is the breakfast at the Ritz and Four season included but not here? At 2k a night, can’t make that happen? Just principal! Still bought a Tee shirt at the gift shop! ….at $45, it’s actually a really nice shirt!
My family and I recently stayed at the White Elephant in Nantucket, and overall, it was a truly special experience. This hotel is absolutely beautiful, and it strikes a perfect balance between luxury and that classic, relaxed New England charm. It’s also very family-friendly, which was a huge plus for us traveling with kids. The rooms are gorgeous — spacious, clean, and decorated in a light, coastal style that makes you feel like you’re really on vacation. We stayed in one of the three-bedroom cottages for part of our trip, and it was honestly perfect. It felt like a private retreat with all the comfort of a full home, which is ideal when you’re traveling as a family. The food at the hotel was also excellent. Whether we were eating breakfast on the patio or grabbing something quick during the day, everything was fresh and thoughtfully prepared. One of the standout features is how easy the White Elephant makes it to enjoy the island. You can rent bikes and beach chairs directly from the property, which makes it super convenient to explore town, head to the beach, or just ride along the harbor. It really adds to the experience and makes you feel like you’re getting the full Nantucket lifestyle. The only downside — and the reason I’m not giving a fully perfect rating — is that the hotel wasn’t able to accommodate us in the same room for all four nights. So we had to move from a three-bedroom cottage to a much smaller one-bedroom cottage, which was a little tough with a family of four. The transition was smooth thanks to the staff, but it did take away from the relaxation and ease we were hoping for on a family trip. That said, the service was top-notch, and the staff truly went out of their way to be helpful and welcoming. They made everything else about our stay feel stress-free and enjoyable, and I can’t say enough about how kind and attentive everyone was. Even with the room switch, I would absolutely recommend the White Elephant to anyone visiting Nantucket — especially families. It’s a beautiful place to stay, with all the amenities you could want and a location that can’t be beat. Just try to confirm your room situation ahead of time if you’re planning a longer stay!
This place is a must visit! The newly remodeled restaurant is stunning! The decor is fantastic. The food is top notch! the lobster Bloody Mary is the absolute cherry on top!
We stayed at White Elephant’s INN, a more private and low-key option compared to their main building. The lobby and room were beautiful, and the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, ensuring we had everything we needed during our stay.
The White Elephant Staff (specifically Nicole Amidon - Front Office Manager) were absolutely incredible. I planned my surprise engagement here recently and cannot say better things about their attention to detail and coordination across all channels (flowers, photographer, etc.). Nicole was amazing in securing my party of 13 all the dinner reservations and rooms to ensure the big ask was a success. I want to say thank you to Nicole and the entire White Elephant staff for making this weekend so special!
Superb! We celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary which coincided with the Christmas Stroll. Fun times! Staff were very gracious. Mitchell greeted us by name every evening asking about our day and stay. The suite was spacious and pristinely clean. Great food and drinks!
Staying in the residences/village, ice maker broken, no big deal. No sheets for pull out couch, no big deal. In room phone doesn’t work to call front desk or housekeeping, no big deal. Terrible service and mediocre food in grille, no big deal. Being told they were really busy(20% occupancy in the village),no big deal. Heat so hot you need to leave the fans, ac and windows open in Dec, no big deal. Paying over $4k for this disappointing experience. A big deal. Stay at the hotel across the street.
We just returned from a fabulous week-long stay at the White Elephant in one of their two bedroom residences. The space was perfectly laid out for our multi-generational family of five and we especially appreciated the kitchen and washer/dryer setup. A HUGE bonus was all of the thoughtful child-friendly amenities (both in the rooms and at the resort as a whole) as well as cute toddler gifts and a sweet card welcoming us to the hotel upon arrival. The BMW car lottery system was so helpful for our daily plans and we were able to grab one of the cars on multiple days, which allowed us to explore the island. The hotel's shuttle/driver service was also great for shorter distances around town. Everyone at the hotel was exceptionally kind and ready to provide guidance or assistance at every turn, from concierge and front-desk staff to the daily housekeeping staff - special shoutout to the welcoming and energetic brunette pool staffer. One small area of improvement: please try and make all of the external doors "soft close" - the automatically slamming doors all around the residence buildings were very disruptive to sleep. Other than that, everything was flawless. We hope to return again in the future!
