The Liberty Hotel Boston offers a unique experience due to its former prison history, with a lively atmosphere and a prime location. However, reviews reveal inconsistencies in service quality, room conditions, and noise levels, creating a mixed guest experience. Some guests rave about the staff and historical ambiance, while others highlight issues with cleanliness, comfort, and responsiveness to concerns.
The ambiance of the hotel was amazing. The lounge, restaurants, magic show, and staff all get 5 stars. The room however is a different story. You can hear every little noise from the hallway and rooms next door. The alarm clock and baby next door sounded like it was in our room. The bed and pillows were very uncomfortable. I will definitely be back for a day trip to hang out in the lounge or for the restaurants, but will never spend the night again.
Our favorite place to stay in Boston! Unique hotel with a great vibe! Guest service was wonderful But the highlight was Justin the bartender at the lobby bar. I’ve never seen a more efficient, professional. It was our pleasure to watch him mix 3-6 drinks at a time with ease and finesse ! Highly recommend
If the Liberty Hotel is what a 5 star hotel is like, I'll stick with 3 and 4 star hotels. I've never stayed in a 5 star hotel before, but my mom and I were visiting a family member at MGH on Thanksgiving, and I thought I would treat us, since the location was so convenient and it was a holiday. It started out pretty well - we were welcomed (by a disinterested receptionist on autopilot) with an offer of a glass of prosecco, and when we asked about dining options, he informed us we could eat at the restaurant across the lobby. We dropped our luggage in our room and returned to the lobby for dinner. However, the restaurant host said she couldn't seat us, but we could get the same menu in the bar area. I guess the restaurant and front desk don't communicate despite being a few yards away. We were disappointed, but decided to make the most of it and lucked out that a couple was leaving one of the very small round bar tables. We waited for 10 minutes at the uncleared table with no acknowledgement from a server and noticed that there seemed to be a restaurant on the lower level too, so we went down to investigate and were told we could be seated right away. It seemed strange that neither the front desk, nor the lobby restaurant would mention this option, so I asked the host if this lower level restaurant was also owned by the hotel, and she said no. Maybe there is some beef between the hotel and that restaurant? Either way, poor customer service on the hotel's part to not point your guests to such a convenient option when your restaurant is full. We had a heavenly, albeit expensive, dinner. When we got back to the room, it was late for us, and we were exhausted. In the course of getting ready for bed, I started to notice that the room was quite run-down and disappointing. There was a bathrobe, which was a nice addition, but they only provided one robe for a room that had two guests and could have slept four people. The ridiculously well-stocked bar was sitting on top of a very sad scratched and peeling refrigerator. One of the pieces of art on the wall was a shadow box with multiple keys and two had fallen off. The soap dish was chipped, there were finger streaks on the bathroom door, and one of the otherwise pristine white beds had a streak of dirt at its foot. Looking back, I wish I had asked for a new room as soon as I had noticed the issues, but by that time we were in or nearly in our PJs, emotionally and physically drained, and just wanted to sleep, so we could get back to the hospital in the morning. The beds were comfortable and the room blocked out most of the noise of the city, so we slept well. The displays in the lobby about the building being a former jail and how it was transformed into a hotel were interesting. When we checked out and were asked how our stay was, we were honest that it wasn't what we expected. However, the receptionist did not inquire further to learn what could have been improved. While the location couldn't have been more convenient to the hospital and we got a good night's sleep, the Liberty Hotel is not worth the 5 star price, so I do not recommend staying here, especially if you are hoping to treat yourself to a special stay.
I flew to Boston to pick up an 8-week-old puppy and am so glad we decided to stay at The Liberty! The location was within walking distance of parks and shops, and it was a quick Uber ride to the airport. Obviously, we also loved how dog-friendly it is! Book the Benny's Retreat package, and there will be toys and treats waiting for you in your room when you arrive! It was also so nice to be able to enjoy drinks and food from the bar in the dog-friendly lobby. The staff even brought little Judge a bowl of water! Can't wait to stay here again, with our without a dog. p.s. the history of the hotel is so fascinating!
I travel constantly for work and hold Titanium Elite status with Marriott, so I’ve seen a lot of hotels. Very few truly stand out—but this one didn’t just deliver, it blew my mind. From the moment I arrived, the experience was exceptional. Jonah, the Director of Operations, was hands-down amazing. He and his entire team went above and beyond at every turn, always with genuine smiles and a clear passion for what they do. Service like this is rare. One of the highlights of my stay was getting to attend the fashion show, which was incredibly cool and such a unique touch. And staying in a beautifully restored former jail? Absolutely unforgettable. The character, history, and execution of this hotel are next level. Did I mention how amazing the staff was? Because they truly made the experience. Thank you for an outstanding stay. From now on, whenever I come to Boston, this will be the only place I stay! Jonah thank you and your staff for making this work trip amazing!
The hotel was truly impressive, offering spacious rooms and a stunning view. I was especially pleased to receive an upgrade, something I have never experienced before without assistance from my ambassador representative despite my status with Marriott. The staff were warm and welcoming, and the service exceeded expectations. The front desk associate who checked me in had a bright, genuine smile, which is rare in most Marriott properties in New York. I look forward to returning with my family for another exceptional stay.
I had a lot of high expectations for this hotel. My wife and I came here for a Christmas shopping event that was held on the higher floors of the main reception, and I was quite disappointed with the overall ambiance. The hanging trees did look festive, but that's honestly about it for the positives. First off, the event was so chaotic that there were lines for the elevators, and people had no idea where they were going. Eventually a staff member showed us the stairway to get to the floors where the event was being held. After getting to the correct floor, everything was so cramped, it was hard to enjoy anything that the vendors had to offer. You would stand and look at what a vendor had to offer and have to move over every 30 seconds for someone to pass by. Just pure chaos. The thing that really brought this to a 1-star was the valet service at the end. We politely gave our ticket to the attendant and waited for probably a good 20 minutes for the attendant to bring my car out the the front. Mind you, I'm pretty sure there were a few people that were behind us that got their cars first for driving luxury vehicles. Once we got into the car, I was rushed by the attendant and he told me that I couldn't park where I was. I didn't even have time to put my seatbelt on, on top of that, the attendant is the one who parked my car there in the first place. This place is far far far from luxury at this point in time. Maybe in 1776 it would have been considered luxury, but by today's standards, it's well below average.
I cannot say enough good things about The Liberty for events. We held our wedding reception in the ballroom and had our guests stay in the hotel, and everyone had an incredible time. The food is phenomenal, hospitality is impeccable and Maria Vega can execute your vision so flawlessly, it made wedding planning so simple and enjoyable. If you’re looking for a luxury and customizable venue, this is your place. We’re already planning our return trip and I cannot wait to come back.
The stay was comfortable and overall enjoyable. The room was clean, well-maintained, and quiet, which made it easy to rest. The bed was comfortable, and the space felt practical rather than cramped. Staff interactions were smooth and efficient, and check-in and check-out were straightforward. The location was convenient, with easy access to transportation and nearby food options. While nothing felt overly luxurious, everything worked as expected. A solid choice for travelers looking for a reliable and comfortable place to stay.
This hotel is INCREDIBLE! Amazing location off of one of the prettiest streets in Boston, steps away from the MGH T stop to easily get anywhere, wonderful and kind staff, delicious food, beautiful decor and incredible rooms! We came with our toddler boys for Veterans Day as my husband is a veteran. The staff welcomed us, giving our boys keys to 'open' the jail cells-- they thought it was AWESOME! They also gave us a surprise room upgrade with an amazing room suite with a spectacular view of the city! The room was perfectly appointed and we had a truly magnificent stay. The hotel was decorated for Christmas and we just had the best time staying here! Highly recommend! Surprisingly family friendly as well :) I lived in Boston for 10 years before moving out of state and frequented the Liberty for dinner, drinks, or just sipping on a cocktail in the lobby area back in the day. This hotel still ranks as a truly unique experience being an old jail that showcases its history, amazing staff, in a gorgeous part of town with lovely restaurants and rooms inside! Highly recommend!
