The Newbury Boston receives mixed reviews, with many praising its elegant atmosphere, prime location in Boston, and attentive service. However, guests frequently report issues with inconsistent service levels, slow responsiveness from staff, and unexpected costs. Concerns regarding construction noise, lack of amenities, and outdated facilities are also prevalent.
The Newbury Boston is undeniably a beautiful property with an elegant atmosphere and a great location. However, my experience was disappointing due to how complicated simple interactions felt. I did not feel particularly welcomed by the front desk, and when trying to get a table at Street Bar, the process felt more like an interrogation than hospitality. Instead of feeling relaxed and taken care of, I left feeling uncomfortable and out of place. I believe hospitality should make guests feel at ease regardless of appearance, and unfortunately that was not my experience here.
Excellent hotel on all counts. Very thoughtful service from everyone in the hotel from front desk, bellman and fireplace butlers. Andrew at front desk had great restaurant recommendations and set the tone from check in to check out. The Street Bar is a great amenity and it's the same kitchen for room service. Hotel is pricey but worth it.
I was here in Feb 2026 for a business meeting. This was my first time at this property. Usually not a place I pick when in Boston. This is a historic property. The charm to match and the local area history to back it up. Right across from Boston Common (park) and on Newbury Street within walking distance of some upscale stores including a rear access to the Tiffany store itself. I was impressed with this property. Class and charm and luxury all put together. The service was impeccable and very attentive. I even dined at the restaurant on the 17th floor and that too was perfect. The bar/restaurant on in the lobby level is charming as well with a library setup for good quiet talking/meeting corners. I can see this place being a good romantic getaway when in Boston. For select business travel this might be a place to hang. It is 'Leaders Club' property so frequent stays are on that program.
I had a wonderful stay at The Newbury Boston. The service was attentive and professional, and the overall ambiance of the hotel was exceptional. There is a timeless quality to the property—it genuinely feels like stepping into an old American film, with classic elegance blended seamlessly with modern comfort. It quickly became one of my favorite hotels in Boston. The amenities were excellent throughout my stay, and the rooftop restaurant, Contessa, was a standout. The abundance of natural light, beautiful views, and relaxed yet refined atmosphere made it a perfect place to spend time, whether for breakfast or simply enjoying the space. Overall, The Newbury delivers a memorable experience that feels both luxurious and warm.
This is a very nicely located hotel on the edge of the Common and the boutique shops on Newbury Street. Management describe it as a pet-friendly boutique hotel. When we stayed we discovered that all but one floor of rooms(10th floor) are pet accessible, which is not made explicit on the website. Please take note when booking Staff are friendly, professional and helpful within the hotel. Rooms are clean and well appointed. Those facing the park have wonderful views towards the city. There is guest access to a Library sitting room where food from the street bar is served, but be aware this is also a dog welcome space. We enjoyed our stay, but not being dog people, the experience was tainted.
Wife and I had a 2 day staycation living 30 minutes away. Hotel and staff were great. Food was fantastic. Our room was the classic fireplace suite on 4th floor not what we expected in such a beautiful hotel. Cold air came in through all the windows at all times the heat could barely keep up. Fireplace great touch. The only fridge in room was stocked with hotel drinks that were charged to room if consumed. Would have liked to have an empty fridge for extra water or our own food and drinks. Overall not terrible but would never stay in that particular room again.
The hotel doesn’t have a lobby for visitors and hotel guests to chat. There is a bar there but otherwise the public space is incredibly tiny. The early morning coffee and pastry stand for guests doesn’t serve hot chocolate, leaving families with kids to fend for themselves. The doormen were either absent or too busy counting their tips to open the door for our party, two of whom are disabled. The location is great but next time, we’ll try the Four Seasons nearby.
We were staying on Leaders' Club points earned during European business trips. Overall, the service here was on par with a 3-star US chain hotel. We had high hopes for this stay, given our experiences at their other hotels. We were disappointed. It took over an hour to receive our small carry-on luggage, which we left at the front desk when we checked in. In the library lounge (which was freezing), we waited 20 minutes for service staff to take our drink order. They never came into the room, so we assumed we were supposed to order at the adjacent bar. The bartender informed us that the library is supposed to be staffed. Once we received the drink, we weren't checked on again. In fact, we never saw a service staff enter the room for any other patron. We waited 30 minutes and then went to the bar again to close out our bill. The one bright spot was breakfast at the Contessa. It truly is a beautiful, elegant and bright space. The service and food were good, although we thought the $27 avocado toast was over-priced. I was willing to give them a second chance, given that it was the holiday season and they were hosting business parties and a wedding the weekend we were there, but my husband strongly disagrees. "A hotel of this caliber and price range," he said, "shouldn't NEED a second chance."
I do have some feedback, some positive bust mostly negative unfortunately. We are a family of five, doing staycation in backbay during the holidays. Boston is perfect at that time of year, and location is ideal. The newbury did not make much effort to make the entry way welcoming. It was very austere, dark. It took over 10 min to have someone at the front desk to check us in. Rooms were clean and comfortable. At cocktails hour, there was no availability. We were directed to go in the library and service was extremely slow. On the way back to our room, we had to wait more than 10 minutes for an elevator. I've asked whether I could use the stairs and was informed that due to a private event, they have to ask the manager. This raise serious concerns about the security of this hotel . There is a weird musky smell throughout, and the atmosphere is overall very austere, unauthentic. I suspect poor culture, poor management, which reflects in the fake attitude of the staff overall. They don't seem happy to work there. I did not feel welcome, this place was to be remembered, unfortunately, but for the wrong reasons.
We had a wonderful stay at Newbury Boston. Everyone we met is so friendly, and the service is warm and top-notch. As I am taking family with me for a business trip, the billing got a bit complex as we forgot to ask which room is the business booking. The front desk staff kindly helped sort out the complex invoice and bills. Location is also super convenient right next to the Boston public garden. Thanks again for the great stay.
